7.   EDDIE GIBSON b 1911-1971

"Eddie was a plumber, and married  to Peggy.  They lived at Denton Burn in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Below is typical type housing built from 1940's to 1960's in Denton Burn. 

 They had one daughter Pauline. 

Pauline won a scholarship to Dame Allens (private) school."

Who is awarded a blue?
Men and women may be awarded a Full Blue (or simply a Blue).  A full Blue is the highest honour that may be bestowed on a Cambridge sportsman or woman.

"They had a boy and a girl. They went to live in Canada. 

Pauline is now a widow and has travelled the world giving talks and lectures.

I always felt sorry for Pauline, as I felt she was never allowed to be a child.  No television, always being made to study, and never seemed to have any fun. 

As the years passed I felt sorry for Uncle Eddie and Aunty Peggy.  They spoke about Pauline and her family, but they never had any visits."

"Later Uncle Eddie was diagnosed with Dementia, so he and Peggy (whose eye sight was failing) decided to go into a nursing home. Pauline came from Canada to empty the house. 

Both died in the nursing home, Eddie died in his eighties.

Mum and I always made sure they had plenty visits from us, we loved them dearly."

MEET THE COUSINS (8) THE CHILDREN OF JOE AND MARY (MOLLY) GIBSON

8.  Joseph Gibson b 1913 - 1994

"Joe married Mary Milburn (Molly b 1912 - 1988), on the 14th December 1935 in the Parish of St Aiden's Newcastle upon Tyne, they were married for 53 years.  Joe was a foreman at Vickers Armstrong, he lived at Denton Burn, Newcastle upon Tyne.  

Sadly the only photographs I have is of a much older Uncle Joe and Aunty Molly.  My parents and Joe and Molly, visited each other regularly until their death."

"They had two sons, Kenneth (who had 3 girls) and Colin who married and moved south but they saw my mum and dad (Molly and Foster) occasionally, but again I have no photographs of my cousins. 

I have no dates of the deaths for either of my cousins.

The 1939 Register records that Joe and Molly were living at 19 Shaftoe Street, Scotswood, Newcastle upon Tyne, very close to the Vickers Armstrong Works, and not far from Tom Gibson Snr and his  wife Mary (Polly) and family, as well as Janet Dent (nee Clark) her husband Luke Dent and family."

There was another row of Shaftoe Street opposite but was demolished some years ago where Joe's aunt & uncle Luke, and Janet  lived at one time (number 6.)

    10. Mary (Molly) Gibson b 1916 - 2012 

"Molly Gibson married Forster Moore on the 24th June 1943."

"Like my cousin Sonia I passed the 11+ but failed the interview, but, eventually, I was transferred from the Secondary School to the Grammar School, at the age of 13.

"I was on holiday in Dunbar, Scotland, when I first met my intended, Jim Smith.  I actually met him at the Episcopalian church in Dunbar as he was the Crucifer, [a person appointed to carry the church's processional cross or crucifix with a long staff during processions at the beginning and end of the service].  Jim was on leave at the time from the Merchant Navy.  When I was 18, and he was again home on leave, we got engaged.  During this time I had started my nurse training, intending to get married at the end of my final year.

Into my final year I found out I was pregnant.  My parents were disappointed, but so very very supportive.  Jim was due home, so we decided to get married at Sugley Church, after which Jim had only one more trip to complete and would come on shore."

"I had only 3 months before my finals when Jim came home, so I left the Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital (RVI) which was,and still is in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne".

"We rented a flat in Dunbar.  Our daughter Kirsten was born (6 weeks early) on the 7th May 1966.  Oh boy the joy that Kirsten brought the whole family; the knitting from Auntie Ann, sheets and blankets from Auntie Louis in Peterborough, nappies galore from Auntie Nan in Ferriby.  Friends arrived, usually by train ride from Newcastle, and of course we drove down in the car.  This baby of ours was truly blessed.  Auntie Peggy loved her so much, as did Dad's side of the family".

"We bought our first house in West Barns, a few yards from Jim's mum, and near his family; not long after I found out I was pregnant again with Calum.

After the children were born I finished my training.  Jim's mother was an angel in disguise and looked after the children.   

When Calum was 5 months old I went back to work (2 nights a week).  Jim was at the local cement works, so it worked out fine."

"I had always wanted to be involved in social work, so I studied for my SVQ (Scottish Vocational Qualification) and achieved Level 5, so I applied to the Social Work Department of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh, and really enjoyed my work there.  At that point I also did a little Marie Curie work."

I and many others were made redundant from the Church of Scotland in December 1999, and by then Jim had taken early retirement from National Nuclear.

In March that year we sold the house and moved to Coldstream, in the borders".

"We then moved much further north to a large house in Keith Morayshire that needed a lot of work".

"I looked for a wee job, and luckily the local health centre were looking for a Health Care Assistant/Phlebotomist* for 15 hours a week, and I got the post.

 

*(A Phlebotomist takes blood and other specimen samples from patients to send to laboratories for diagnostic testings).

I made many acquaintances in my career, and some really good friends, that I saw regularly, one is in Australia, one lived  in Creetown that I saw regularly, and another lived locally in Keith, who sadly, passed away in 2018.

"Our daughter Kirsten had a son Christopher in 1991, but her relationship with his father broke down.  Later she married Alex, and they had a son Struan who was born in 2005."

Sadly my husband Jim died in hospital on the 2nd January 2023. I continue to live in the small sheltered housing complex in Aberlour Banffshire.

MEET THE COUSINS (9) THE CHILD OF ANN GIBSON AND ROBERT HULL

"They had one child, a daughter; Sonia was born in 1945, she was 14 months older than me.!

Bob's mother 'Grandma Hull' lived with them.  She was a wonderful dressmaker, and made all our coats, skirts and dresses, so it was inevitable Sonia and I were dressed the same."

"At the age of 11 Sonia passed the 11+ examination for the local Grammar School."

It was inevitable, with her father's great love of music, Sonia too would become involved.  She trained as a teacher, (where she met her husband. They married in 1968 at Lemington Methodist Church.  Sonia wore her mother's wedding veil. They had 3 children. In later life Ann and Rob went south to live with Sonia and the children; all were academically inclined. Grandma Hull (Ann Gibson) had a great influence on her grandchildren and often brought them North to visit family.   Sonia and her husband now have 4 grandchildren."

Bob Hull began his career in music before the war as a choirboy at Lemington Methodist Church, and by the age of eighteen he was their conductor.

Rob belonged to a family with a strong musical background and was never short of encouragement and training.  His studies for the examinations for the Royal Academy of Music were well advanced when war broke out in 1939, but they had to be put to one side when he became a Trooper in the Life Guards.

He was stationed at Bulford Camp, Carter Barracks, on Salisbury Plain, where he did his basic military training. Carter Barracks consisted of permanent hutted buildings constructed in 1939-40 and demolished in 1978.

Early days, on parade, Bob fell for one of the army's oldest tricks, when the men were asked "Anyone here interested in music?"  In no time at all Bob found himself in the *NAAFI, sent with another 'volunteer' to move the piano. 

His companion, also a musician could not resist the temptation to play the instrument, and picking up the tune, Bob started to sing.  As luck would have it he was heard by no less a person than the Regimental Bandmaster, who happened to be passing, and on the spot asked Bob to sing with the band.

 [* The Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI) was, and still is, a company created by the British government on 9th December 1920 to run recreational establishments needed by the British Armed Forces, and to sell goods to servicemen and their families. It runs clubs, bars, shops, supermarkets, launderettes, restaurants, cafes and other facilities on most British military bases and also canteens on board Royal Naval Ships.]

"Bob's enthusiasm soon attracted the attention of fellow troopers, who began to raise their voices with his, just for the sheer joy of it, and in no time they formed themselves into a singing group, 'The Life Guards' Choir, giving concerts and helping voluntary fund-raising efforts outside the barracks.  Their reputation reached the ears of the BBC, who approached the Colonel to arrange an audition, he agreed; the singers were assembled, still in their working overalls.  Soon they found themselves regularly performing in a programme called Private Smith Entertains with well known stars such as George Formby".

They toured Southern Command singing for the troops.

With the end of hostilities Bob returned to his job with the Co-op in Lemington, and resumed his musical activities and became principal bass in the Newcastle Cathedral Choir.

MEET THE COUSINS (PART 6)THE CHILDREN OF ALFRED AND LOU GIBSON

6. Alfred Gibson b 1910 - 1986

"Alfred (Alf) married Lou Weir.  They were strict but loving parents."

They had two daughters, Carole and Aileen.  Alfred became a draftsman, working at Aldermarston; he lived in Peterborough.  Alf suddenly passed away in his sleep in 1986.

Carole trained as a nanny at an auspicious training college.  She married Gavin and had a boy and a girl. The marriage ended in divorce with Gavin being awarded custody of their children, (a boy and girl).  Carole then moved to Eastbourne. 

Aileen became an accountant.  She married Ian; sadly she passed away in her 40s due to complications after contracting influenza."
